Udyog Aadhaar: History, Current Status and How to Migrate to Udyam

Updated 7 June 2026

What Was Udyog Aadhaar and Why It Mattered

Launched in September 2015, Udyog Aadhaar was a significant reform in how India registered its small businesses. Before it, entrepreneurs had to fill lengthy EM-I and EM-II forms, visit government offices, and wait for approvals. Udyog Aadhaar replaced all of that with a single online form requiring only an Aadhaar number and basic enterprise details.

Between 2015 and 2020, over one crore enterprises registered under this system, making it one of the most successful MSME formalisation drives in India.

Why the Government Replaced Udyog Aadhaar

No External Verification

Enterprises self-declared their investment and turnover without any cross-check with financial databases. This made it possible to misrepresent enterprise size and incorrectly claim benefits meant for smaller enterprises.

No Integration with Tax Systems

Udyog Aadhaar had no connection to PAN or GST databases, making it impossible for the government to track enterprise growth or classify enterprises accurately.

Current Status of Udyog Aadhaar

Udyog Aadhaar is no longer valid for new registrations. Banks, government procurement departments, and scheme administrators now require the Udyam Registration Certificate — not the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum — as valid proof of MSME status.

How to Migrate From Udyog Aadhaar to Udyam

Migration to Udyam Registration is a straightforward process that our team at udyamadhar.in can assist you with. You will need your Aadhaar number, the original UAM number, PAN, and GSTIN if applicable. After Aadhaar OTP verification, the system fetches your earlier registration data, which can be reviewed and updated before submission.
