Udyam Registration: The Official MSME Registration System in India
Updated 7 June 2026
Why Udyam Registration Was Introduced
When the Government of India replaced the Udyog Aadhaar system in July 2020, the objective was clear — to create a registration framework that is verifiable, accurate, and integrated with financial databases. The result was the Udyam Registration system, which links enterprise identity with Aadhaar, PAN, and GST records simultaneously.
Every enterprise that completes the Udyam Registration process receives a permanent Udyam Registration Number and a digitally issued certificate. This certificate is the only document recognised by banks, government departments, and procurement agencies as valid proof of MSME status in India today.
The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises administers this system under the MSME Development Act, 2006, as amended through a gazette notification effective 1st July 2020.
MSME Classification Under Udyam Registration
Enterprises are classified based on composite criteria — investment in plant, machinery, or equipment AND annual turnover. Both criteria must be satisfied simultaneously.
Micro Enterprise
Investment: Up to Rs. 1 crore | Annual Turnover: Up to Rs. 5 crore
Small Enterprise
Investment: Up to Rs. 10 crore | Annual Turnover: Up to Rs. 50 crore
Medium Enterprise
Investment: Up to Rs. 50 crore | Annual Turnover: Up to Rs. 250 crore
These criteria apply equally to manufacturing and service enterprises. Earlier, separate limits existed for each sector. The 2020 revision removed this distinction.
Who Is Eligible to Apply
Any enterprise operating in India — whether in manufacturing, production, processing, or services — can apply for Udyam Registration provided it meets the classification criteria. Eligible business entities include:

- Limited Liability Partnerships (LLP)

- PAN number of the enterprise

Benefits of Udyam Registration
Collateral-Free Loans Under CGTMSE
The Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises provides collateral-free credit to registered MSMEs. Banks cannot demand property or assets as security for loans covered under this scheme.
Protection Against Delayed Payments
Under the MSMED Act, buyers must pay MSME suppliers within 45 days of accepting goods or services. Delayed payment attracts compound interest. Disputes can be filed through the MSME Samadhaan portal.
Government Procurement Preference
The Public Procurement Policy mandates that 25 percent of annual procurement by central government ministries and PSUs must come from MSME-registered suppliers. Registered MSMEs are also exempt from paying Earnest Money Deposit in government tenders.
Patent and Trademark Subsidies
Udyam-registered enterprises receive a 50 percent subsidy on patent registration fees and trademark registration fees. ISO certification expenses can also be reimbursed.
Technology and Skill Support
Schemes like the Credit Linked Capital Subsidy Scheme (CLCSS) provide upfront capital subsidy for technology upgradation. Government Tool Rooms and Technology Centres are accessible at subsidised rates.
